New Opel Meriva 2011

Its monocab silhouette is fluid, elegant and dynamic. The rear window graphic features a distinctive wave accentuating the rear-hinged FlexDoors, improving the view for rear seated passengers, particularly children.

Increased flexibility is extended to all areas in the new Meriva. In the cabin, the innovative FlexSpace rear seating system requires even less effort to move the seats in their different positions or to fold them down.

Throughout the cabin, storage space is considerably increased with convenient locations provided for items commonly carried inside a car. The revolutionary FlexRail console system consisting of exchangeable storage units that can slide on rails located between the front seats provides convenient and adaptable storage for any kind of use.

Up front, the generously proportioned seats are similar to those of the new Astra and Insignia.

They offer a wide range of adjustment – 240 mm forwards/backwards and 65 mm in height – allowing people of all size and age to find optimal comfort for their journeys. Also new for Meriva is the availability of Opel’s FlexFix integrated rear bicycle carrier.

The new Meriva benefits from a longer wheelbase, wider front and rear tracks, all contributing to improved handling and greater ride comfort.

The range of powertrains features economical and efficient turbocharged engines offering a power bandwidth from 75 to 140 hp.

A particularly economical ecoFLEX version will also be offered. The Meriva will offer a choice of 5 and 6-speed manual transmissions as well as a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Designed and developed at Opel’s engineering center in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the new Meriva will be built in Zaragoza, Spain and is scheduled to go on sale this summer.

The FlexDoors concept

The FlexDoors rear-hinged rear doors concept is a first from a volume manufacturer in the industry. Unlike the few well-known rear-hinged doors systems available, FlexDoors features full-sized doors which open independently without the need for a clamshell overlap by the front doors.

A conventional B-pillar makes this independent opening possible, while ensuring good body rigidity and side impact protection. In addition, it has a handle that further facilitates entry and exit.

Locating the door hinges on the C-pillar also allows more clearance for passengers’ feet to swing past the B-pillar flange. The FlexDoors also open up to 84 degrees, much wider than conventional doors, for which 68-70 degrees is the usual standard.

Front passengers also benefit from the same 84 degrees opening angle. FlexDoors are also more ergonomic and convenient for the front passengers to open FlexDoors when stowing a jacket, a briefcase or an umbrella behind the front seat.

FlexDoors also provide greater safety, especially for young families. For example, when both the front and rear doors are open at the same time, a safety zone is created as both child and parent can get out of the car without a door separating them, reducing the risk of children stepping out into traffic.

Inside and out, the Meriva moves forward Opel’s new, expressive design language – sculptural artistry meets German precision – and adheres to the same focus on quality already seen on Insignia and the new Astra.

Opel designers created a dynamic and elegant monocab. A lower, sweeping roof-line combined with Opel’s signature blade side-body motif and the wave rear window line give the Meriva a fresh, distinctive character and look.

The interior is characterized by flowing lines and surfaces. The wraparound wing shaped instrument panel enhances the feeling of width and roominess. The forward leaning center stack contributes to this and adds a notion of sportiness and sculpture. Six different levels of colour and trim will be available.

The All New Opel GTC

At the 2010 Paris Motor Show, Opel GTC has made its debut. Both the exterior and interior of this elegance car is designed in sporty styling. Both the sculpted shape and tension on the exterior of Opel GTC are achieved by three bold lines. The designer’s intention of this way by limiting the line influence to maximize drama. Exterior Design

In profile, the designers have maximized drama by limiting the amount of lines: three strong lines create tension and provide a sculpted shape.

The Opel signature blade is introduced in the same direction as first seen in the Insignia – a fine, crisp line that sweeps upward from the rocker at the beginning of the front door.

A second line encapsulates the door handle and sweeps to the rear, emphasizing the vehicle’s dramatic stance by spreading the surfaces to a fine undercut and a broad shoulder.

The third line following the silhouette of the roof is finished in finely brushed aluminum accentuating the window graphic, which guides the eye to the sharply accented integrated spoiler. The shoulder section is the most dramatic area of the Opel GTC Paris.

The broadest point pulls down to a wide athletic “bulldog stance,” giving the car a very purposeful road presence.

The line from the C-pillar slides into the tail and curls around into the rear spoiler, which is ingeniously integrated into the continuing roof line.

The clean frontal styling features Opel’s typical centerline crease.

It is further accented by intense, very slim eagle-eye shaped headlamps acting as parenthesis between the refined chrome emblem bar and the dramatic low trapezoidal grill which hints at its sporty character.

Opel typical wing-shaped signature LED daytime running lights get a new twist with finely sculptured chrome jewels that are seen easily behind clear glass. The trapezoidal grille is recognizably Opel, but separate from the chrome bar and placed lower, for a race track feel.

The wide stance is accentuated in the rear, where the proportion of the vehicle is most imposing due to the powerful shoulder design. This is further enhanced with the LED taillights and one long stretched “wing” motif, which make the new Opel vehicles distinguishable at night.

The aerodynamics of the dynamic 21-inch wheels is optimized with carbon-fiber inserts which enclose the center caps.

Interior Design

Echoing the flowing, sculpted forms of the bodywork, the hallmarks of the GTC Paris interior are sweeping lines and shapes as well as the bold use of fabric.

The interior is driver-focused, with a positive/negative use of color:

Whereas the driver’s seat is red with black trim, all other components in the interior are outfitted in a charcoal black with red stitching.

The car’s inspiration, a quote from Richard Bach’s novel, Jonathon Livingstone Seagull is laser-etched in calligraphy script into the seat … “and the speed was pure beauty.”

Sporty, bucket front seats have been specially designed for the GTC Paris.

Their aggressively shaped contours and graphics perfectly compliment the overall dynamic spirit of the car are outlined in titanium and filled in with black netting, repeating a design cue seen on the carbon fiber inserts on the wheels.

The small black leather racing steering wheel features metal inserts.

On the dashboard, the interior continues Opel’s recurring “wing” and “blade” motifs. In this execution, the blade theme is expressed in details like the shape of the polished chrome door grab handles and the trim for gearshift molding.

The wing design cue is immediately evident in the warm, inviting wraparound instrument panel that embraces front seat occupants. It arcs across the cabin into the top of the door moldings.

The Opel design team used leather and micro-fibers for the seats, plush carpeting on the flooring, and a textured black instrument panel. These classic materials have a contemporary twist, not only in the choice of hues but also in the positive/negative stitching.

Technical Features

The GTC Paris is powered by a 290 hp 2.0 liter, twin-scroll turbo-charged four-cylinder engine with direct injection, Start/Stop technology and equipped with a six-speed manual transmission.

Interior Design

The Zafira Tourer Concept interior is bathed in light thanks to a panoramic windscreen that flows into a generous glass roof extending to the rear of the car. A second pane of high-tech composite material is edge-lit by LEDs. Tiny metallic particles are embedded in the cabin’s upper sections to reflect the light and give off a warm glow that can be varied in different shades of yellow. The latest evolution of the Flex7 seating system has two rows in place, providing five-seat capacity. At the push of a button into a four-seater with limousine levels of space. A new folding mechanism allows the centre section of the second row to fold down, revealing two armrests for occupants in the outer seats.

These seats can then slide back and towards each other, creating generous levels of space around passengers. Extended footrests complement the seating system still further. The concept’s tiltable three-piece headrests are electrically powered, though for safety reasons the driver’s remains in a vertical position when the car is in motion.

In the ‘lounge’ setting, with the exception of the driver’s headrest, each swivels 90 degrees to the horizontal position while the outer elements curve slightly forward.

Up front, a large touch-screen display dominates the centre console, above which a covered storage compartment can hold a tablet PC like an iPad. The heating can be controlled using two turn knobs below the display, and air conditioning via touch-buttons. Thanks to the flexible and pivot-mounted tablet PCs on the front seat backs, passengers in the second row can comfortably surf the internet or control multi-media applications.

The seats are tailored in caramel leather with colour-matched quilted seams and stitching, contrasted with Cocoa dark brown door trim, soft deep-pile carpet and a host of premium materials.

Exterior design

The Zafira Tourer exterior has a sculptured and sophisticated look, underlined by the Frost Liquid Metal, a special metallic silver-grey paint. At the front of the car, wing-shaped LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon AFL and fog lamps are all contained behind a single Plexiglass cover.

These combine with fog lamps encased in polished aluminum frames to visually shorten the front overhang. The characteristic Opel centre-crease on the hood reaches from the grille to the windscreen. Like the Astra Sports Tourer, the Zafira’s belt line sweeps upwards and visually helps to propel the vehicle forward.

The aerodynamic body significantly reduces wind noise for quiet cruising and the silhouette, designers say, is reminiscent of a high-speed train. Aerodynamic exterior mirrors house turn indicators that are encased like jewels in a polished aluminum body.

These high-class trim details are echoed in the waist moulding of the side glass as well as on the roof rails. The dark LED tail lamps, which incorporate Opel’s signature blade, wrap around the body side and tailgate. The horizontal aluminum bar stretches far into the light elements, giving the concept a broad, sporty look at the rear.

The parallelogram-shaped dual exhaust pipes are integrated in another aluminum bar in the lower fascia, adding to its distinctive appearance. The dark metallic grey 20-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels with 245/40 R20 tires have polished high-gloss spokes that contrast with diamond-cut aluminum surfaces that make them stand out against the dark background of the rims.
